If there's one thing that is overly emphasized in fitness it's the importance of muscle. Muscles move joints. That's all they do. nothing else.

If there’s one thing that is overly emphasized in fitness it’s the importance of muscle. Muscles move joints. That’s all they do. nothing else.

(The heart is a very complex “joint” in the form of a pump and for purpose of this discussion should be thought of as an exception to the rule.)

Back to the point: Our obsession with muscle has confused us for far too long. Our ability to perform, live well, feel great and be healthy is more related to how well our bodies “program” our muscles to move and not simply their size, shape, work capacity. If we want to play and live better we need to learn how to effectively and efficiently “code” our muscles. Code?

Yes; our bodies and muscles are like complex neural networks with a large “centralized node”, our brain as the main processor and thousands of sub-processors placed strategically throughout our bodies. Proper training helps these sub processors work well and leads to better coordinated movement and ultimately less incidence of injury.

This is why training must incorporate balance, core, strength, flexibility, agility, power, endurance literally all the elements of fitness.

learn how to train in all these modalities and particularly for balance and you will keep your joints injury free.

Tara Parker-Pope, in the NYTIMES Well Blog, recently posted an article on Learning While You Dream. I encourage you to read the article on offer you a very brief of it’s conclusions here; To improve your performance on a test or in an activity you need to be “excited” about it. The logically take away here is that what we are passionate about our brain spends more time processing. This leads to improvements in performance. I’ve read a lot of other studies and research that supports this in the areas of Expert Performance, Optimal Experience, Performance Enhancement for Sports (sports psychology & visualization) as well as developmental psychology, and more recently in some books on evolutionary theory and neuroscience. I’ve also posted here my comments on the well blog for those of you who don’t get to the NY TIMES Site.

There are also other posts on this blog which refer to ways to improve your performance and find your passion. See categories: Positive Hypothesis and How can you thrive.

Soon this blog and site will be changing to offer far more practical and how to advice on how to help yourself discover your potential.

_____________________
my response to NYTIMES Well Blog post

“Dreaming seems to me to offer us clues to how we process our lives. They help us make sense of the world and can help us improve our performance at work, play and study.

I’ve been obsessed with the idea that you can create the right environment or conditions to experience life in a more fulling way and have looked at expert performance, optimal experience, neuroscience and the more recent and comprehensive work by Malvin Konner titled Evolution of Childhood for clues on this.

What I’ve found and what seems to me to be most is clear, (as stated above) is that we need to be “excited” about the things we do and especially if we are trying to improve or learn something new. This is true whether it is a intellectual or physical pursuit.

There’s also evidence that there’s an intimate connection between how we experience life, how we learn and how we move. I believe that we should spend more time trying to find what brings us joy and what we’re passionate about and then intelligently train for those things. I’ve witnessed many people change their lives by applying this methodology.

For those people interested in exploring their potential physically and intellectually there’s one simple truth:

Continually challenge your senses and let your curiosity drive your ambition. It is the surest way to have fun, dream and discover your strengths in the process.

- effectively use your time, energy and resources – take appropriate risks & avoid injury
Over the past 15 years, I’ve been obsessed with how to create a training methodology and practice that will not only help people achieve their fitness goals but also help them create a more positive life. In this time, what’s become clear to me is that there’s a distinct relationship between training intensity and optimal experience.

Today is a sad day. St. Vincent's Hospital is closing.

Today is a sad day. St. Vincent’s Hospital is closing.

This hospital served the poor and provided exceptional care with a fantastic nursing staff.

Most people are completely unaware of the great medicine that was being practiced there by a select group of exceptional MD and nurses there.

Their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was arguably the best in NYC. Their staff there perhaps among the best in the world. My daughter’s life was saved there and I spent 10 weeks there watching and observing how things are run.

To add insult to injury, public figures with no knowledge and a lot of self-interest make statements like this:

“I would not want to bring my children there,” Ms. Sarandon declared at a landmarks preservation hearing.

Sorry but: What does Susan Sarandon know? Has her child ever been admitted for an emergency? Is she one of the hundreds of thousands of poor people that the hospital has taken care of?

You’re right Ms. Sarandon, you shouldn’t bring your children there but you should take some of your Millions of dollars and support the hospital’s mission:

- To help people in need of quality medical care.

This is truly a sad day for NYC and a testament to how distorted and perverse our health care system has become.

My advice: Stay away from hospitals by taking care of yourself and those you love because there are fewer and fewer places that will help you get better.

In addition, if there ever was a exclamation point for further reform including mandatory health savings for everyone, tort reform and finally each and every person and family taking more responsibility for their health and futures, I cannot think of one.

Expect more closings like this and less good medicine being practiced until things change radically.
